Mustangs Earn Seven Victories To Defeat Creighton
March 11, 2017

DALLAS (SMU) — SMU won seven of 10 races to claim the first victory of the spring season versus Creighton at White Rock Lake Saturday morning.

"I'm happy with the way the day turned out," head coach Doug Wright said. "We've been preparing for a long time for this. We got the results we were looking for, but it can always get faster, we can always get better. That's a question we always ask ourselves."

The Mustangs started strong beating the Bluejays by just over 20 seconds in the 1st Varisty 8+ race. SMU's 1V8+ boat, built by Molly O'Connell, Savannah Moody, Brittany Rigg, Eki Olumese, Alyssa Sands, Paige Papesch, Adelaide Moore and Kelly McGowan, finished at 7:02.85, while the Bluejays 1V8+ boat crossed the finish line at 7:23.31.

SMU grabbed another win in the 3V4+A race, with Polley, Samantha Kurtz, Coco Tautkus, Burkhardt and Thibeau, crossing the line at 8:44.34 while Creighton finished at 8:52.99.

The 4V4+ boat, built by Melissa Chambers, O'Toole, Daniels, Gabrielle Petrucelli and Moyra Tran, gave SMU its third victory of the morning beating Creighton with a final time of 8:56.39. The Bluejays finished at 9:01.74.

O'Connell, Moody, Rigg, Olumese and Lauren Vanek made up the 1V4+A boat, finishing with a final time of 7:57.16 while Creighton crossed at 8:23.91.

SMU picked up its final three wins of the day in the 1V4+B boat (7:46.23), the 2V4+A boat (8:05.53) and the final race of the day, the 3V8+ boat, with a final time of 7:40.66.

"We were going to use today to evaluate what we've been doing up to this point," Wright said. "We're going to use this day to also evaluate what we need to do to get faster in the future. We'll come away with a great successful day and get to work on Monday. We'll see what we need to get done to get ready for UCO on the 25th."

SMU hosts University of Central Oklahoma at White Rock Lake on March 25. Check SMUMustangs.com for ways to follow the event. Follow @SMURowing on twitter or "Like" SMU Rowing on Facebook for updates throughout event.
