Gomez Selected To Compete At NCAA Swimming And Diving Championships

INDIANAPOLIS (SMU/NCAA) – SMU junior swimmer Jonathan Gomez was selected to compete at the 2017 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships March 22-25 in Indianapolis, the organization announced Wednesday.

Gomez earned invites in the 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard individual medley, while having the option of adding the 500-yard freestyle to his list based on his qualification in the previous two events.

The Cali, Colombia, native ranks 15th of 29 invited swimmers in the 200 fly, posting a 1:41.98 to win the American Athletic Conference Championship and set the SMU program record. In the 400 IM, Gomez also topped the conference and the SMU all-time list covering the distance in 3:43.97. The time places him 22nd on the list of 29 invited swimmers.

A total of 30 swimmers were invited in the 500 free with a cutoff time of 4:16.67. Gomez sits just outside the group at 35th at 4:17.68.

Gomez was named The American's Most Outstanding Swimmer of the 2017 conference championships following his three meet and school record-breaking performances. He was twice named the conference swimmer of the week during the 2016-17 season.
