Erasmus, Samardzic Wrap Up Competition At NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) – Senior Marne Erasmus and junior Matea Samardzic wrapped up competition at the 2017 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis. Samardzic represented the Mustangs in the 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard individual medley, while Erasmus competed in the 100-yard butterfly.

Samardzic earned her highest placement on day three of the Championships, placing 24th in heats of the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:10.13. The final day saw the junior finish 25th in preliminary action of the 200-yard backstroke, as she covered the distance in 1:53.42.

Samardzic finishes her first season as a Mustang as the school record holder in the 400 IM (4:05.52) and conference champion in three events and three relays. She posted NCAA B cuts in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, as well as 200- and 400-yard individual medleys, and was part of SMU's 400-yard medley relay that came in under the provisional standard. She has six all-conference honors (3 individual, 3 relay) on her resume.

Erasmus made her third consecutive appearance in the 100-yard butterfly prelims on Friday. The senior clocked a 52.41 to place 26th.

Erasmus earned the automatic qualification in the 100-yard distance, while also having the opportunity to compete in the 200 distance having posted a B cut during the season. She earned individual conference championships in both races, which completed a four-year sweep for the senior in the 100. Erasmus was also part of conference championship 200- and 400-yard medley relays.

She closes out her four years as a three-time individual All-American, as well as a two-time relay honoree, and a six-time individual conference champion. She holds the program record (51.10) in the 100 fly and was part of the record-setting 400-yard medley relay (3:31.66) in 2014. In four years, Erasmus posted three NCAA A cuts and five NCAA B cuts, in addition to four relays that met the qualifying standard and two relays that met the provisional standard.

With the close of the 2017 Championships, the Mustangs wrap up their NCAA season. SMU earned runner-up honors at the American Athletic Conference Championships, picking up six individual championships as well as three relay wins. Samardzic was named the league's Co-Most Outstanding Swimmer, while eight Mustangs and five relays earned all-conference honors. SMU posted 16 times that met the NCAA B standard, as well as an A cut from Erasmus, and a 400-yard medley relay under the provisional standard.

Select Mustangs will head to Arena Pro Swim Series Mesa, April 14-16.
