Mustangs Earn Three UEC Annual Awards, Eight All-Conference Team Honors
Gwin Named UEC Co-Coach of the Year; Yowan Named Flat Rider of the Year, Fences Freshman of the Year

WACO, Texas (SMU/NCEA) — SMU head coach Carol Gwin was named the United Equestrian Conference (UEC) Co-Coach of the Year, and freshman Vivian Yowan was named the UEC Equitation on the Flat Rider of the Year and Equitation Over Fences Freshman of the Year.

Along with the three annual awards, SMU garnered eight All-Conference team spots and two UEC Championship Most Outstanding Player (MOP) awards.

Gwin led the Mustangs to the top of the UEC for the second straight season, guiding SMU to a 4-1 record in conference meets. The Mustangs finished the regular-season tied for first, before earning runner-up honors at the UEC Championship. SMU earned its highest ranking in program history on Oct. 26, 2016, being ranked No. 4 in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) poll, after wins at then-No. 3 TCU and against then-No. 9 Oklahoma State.

Yowan was named the Equitation on the Flat Rider of the Year after posting a 7-3-1 record in the regular-season. This is the third straight year a Mustang has won a Rider of the Year award. Yowan joins Sylvia de Toledo and Schaefer Raposa who won the Equitation Over Fences Rider of the Year awards in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The Darien, Conn., native also earned the Equitation Over Fences Freshman of the Year honor, following an 8-3 regular-season record which included four MOPs. Following the UEC Championship, she is 10-3 in the discipline. She is the second straight Mustang to win the Over Fences Freshman of the Year award, following Nora Gray.

SMU garnered eight All-Conference team spots, six in the hunt seat arena and two in the western arena. de Toledo, Yowan and Gray earned spots on the All-Equitation Over Fences team, while de Toledo, Yowan and Leina King were named All-Equitation on the Flat. In the western arena, senior Hannah McCain and junior Keagan Snively were named to the All-UEC Horsemanship and Reining teams, respectively.

Yowan and Snively won the UEC Championship Equitation Over Fences and Reining MOPs, respectively, following their performances during the two-day tournament.
