Volleyball Sweeps UMass Lowell To Win Texas State Tournament

SMU Sweeps UMass Lowell For Texas State Tournament Title

SAN MARCOS, Texas (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team swept UMass Lowell Saturday afternoon in San Marcos, Texas, to win the Creeds and Crests Classic at Texas State (25-12, 25-15, 25-12). Brittany Adams led the team with nine kills and no errors, hitting .529.

The Mustangs (6-3) picked up their third straight-sets victory with a 25-12 win in the third set. SMU scored on eight of the first 10 serves, including a run of six straight to break a 2-2 tie. The River Hawks (3-6) never got within five points the rest of the set. SMU hit .440, its most efficient set of the match, with 12 kills and only one error. Lexi Nordmann scored five kills to pace the offense in the final set, finishing the match with nine kills and one error for a .500 attack percentage.

Lauren Mills and Meryn Kennedy each scored eight kills for SMU, which scored 43 kills as a team with a .391 attack percentage. The SMU defense posted seven blocks, holding UMass Lowell to 28 kills and a .104 attack percentage. Mills led the team with 11 digs, and Montana Watts recorded 10. Allison Hughes finished with 20 of SMU's 40 assists, and Kendall Patterson tallied 15.

With a two-point lead, 7-5, in the first, the Mustangs went on a 10-2 run for a 17-7 lead. The scoring spree was all SMU needed as it won the first set 25-12 over the River Hawks. Brunstein and Mills each had four of SMU's 15 kills in the set. SMU hit .351 in the set, while holding UMass-Lowell to a .022 attack percentage with eight kills. SMU posted four blocks on defense.

SMU took a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 win in the second set. The River Hawks kept it close early, leading 7-6, but an 8-1 run by the Mustangs gave SMU a 14-8 lead. The SMU offense hit .400 in the set en route to the win, scoring 16 kills with four errors in 30 attempts. Adams scored six kills to lead the Mustangs.

The Mustangs return home to host the SMU DoubleTree Classic Friday against TCU at 7 p.m. SMU will also face Arkansas Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
