SMU Suffers 3-1 Loss At Home To TCU
Nordmann, Mills Lead Mustangs With 13 Kills Each

DALLAS (SMU) – Lexi Nordmann and Lauren Mills led the SMU volleyball team with 13 kills and four blocks each, but it wasn't enough to take the victory against TCU in Moody Coliseum Friday night. The Mustangs lost 3-1 to their Metroplex rival (25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22).

Nordmann hit .458 with just two errors in 24 attacks to lead the SMU offense. SMU's defense kept the match close, as the Mustangs posted 14 blocks, getting seven from Kelly Bruntein, who also scored 12 kills as an outside hitter. Meryn Kennedy was involved in eight blocks in the middle, and scored eight kills.

TCU (7-3) kept SMU (6-4) from forcing a fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. SMU led by two, 12-10, but TCU went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-13 lead. SMU answered, retaking the lead with a 4-1 run, but then TCU scored five consecutive. It was enough to win the set and the match.

The Horned Frogs finished the comeback, taking the first set, 25-23. After erasing an early three-point deficit with a 7-1 run, SMU took an 8-5 lead. The Mustangs stretched the lead to as many as five points, 12-7. Trailing by four, 15-11, TCU charged back, tying the score at 19 apiece. SMU kept TCU from taking the lead, but with the Mustangs in front, 23-22, the Horned Frogs were able to steal three straight for the two-point win. Mills and Brunstein each scored four kills to lead the SMU offense, which hit .303 in the set.

The Mustangs captured the second set to even the match, 1-1. After a close loss in the first, SMU started the second with seven of the first 10 points for a 7-3 lead. TCU came back, tying the score at 9-9, and took a 16-13 lead with a 6-1 run. SMU scored four straight for a 19-17 lead, and the Mustangs didn't relinquish it this time, taking a 25-21 victory. Mills again paced the offense, matching Kennedy with four kills for the Mustangs. SMU held TCU to a .125 attack percentage with 18 digs and four blocks.

The third set was another tight one, but TCU out-scored SMU 6-3 at the end for a 25-22 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. The score was tied 15 times in the third set, and neither team led by more than two until TCU took its fateful three-point lead, 23-20, that SMU was not able to overcome. Brunstein scored five of SMU's 13 kills in the set, but TCU out-high SMU .278-.175 for the win.

SMU faces Arkansas Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the last match before the two-time defending American Athletic Conference champions start conference play at home Sept. 22 against Tulane.
