Clark Leads Offense With Two Shots, One On Goal

TULSA, Okla. (SMU) – The SMU men's soccer team fell in overtime at Tulsa, 1-0, Sunday evening at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.

Tulsa's Gustavo Vargas knocked in a header from two yards out off a corner kick in the 94th minute to give the Golden Hurricane the win.

The Mustangs fell to 6-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in The American, while Tulsa improved to 3-3-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference play.

In the first half, SMU had a few chances to get on the board firing three shots, with one on goal. In the 19th minute, Bryce Clark launched a free kick from 30 yards out, but Garrett McLaughlin header hit the outside of the post. In the 24th minute, Mauro Cichero navigated through traffic and fired a shot from 35 yards out that went wide right.

After a scoreless half, the Mustangs continued to be aggressive in the second period tallying six shots, with one on goal. SMU had back-to-back opportunities in the 68th minute from Jared Rice and Colten Habecker, respectively. Rice shot was blocked by a defender inside the box, followed by Habecker who picked up the loose ball and fired a shot on frame that was saved by Tulsa's keeper.

Eight Mustangs recorded shots led by Clark with two. SMU had 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Michael Nelson recorded two saves to give him 21 on the season.

SMU continues conference play at home Friday against UCF. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on PonyUp TV.
