Cichero Scores Golden Goal In Double Overtime Against Memphis
Nelson Gets Fifth Shutout Of Season For No. 17 SMU

Oct. 14, 2017

DALLAS (SMU) – Mauro Cichero netted the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute to propel SMU to a 1-0 double overtime win against Memphis Saturday night.

“It was a good game. I thought that Memphis would sit deep and try to catch us on the counter,” Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. “They were very well organized, they sat deep and had a couple chances on the break, but I thought we moved the ball well.”

The Mustangs improved to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while Memphis falls to 2-7-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.

SMU sits in a tie for second place in The American with USF (6-4-1, 3-1 American), while Connecticut is in first with 4-0 record in league play and 7-3-2 overall.

SMU’s golden goal came after Talen Maples launched a pass to Colten Habecker just outside of the 18 yard box, who then headed a pass back to Cichero for his ninth goal of the season. The MAC Hermann Trophy candidate has 24 career goals and 10 game-winners.

“Talen drove a long ball just outside the edge of the box, Colten drifted high and the ball was played to him,” Hudson said. “The keeper punched it low and Mauro [Cichero] was in a good spot to chip it over him.”

In the net, goalkeeper Michael Nelson finished with four saves and tallied his fifth shutout of the season.

SMU tallied 16 shots, including three on frame, while the Mustangs backline held Memphis to nine shots with four on goal.

The Mustangs remain undefeated at home (8-0) and is off to its best start through 12 matches since 2010, when the Mustangs began the season 11-1.

SMU's three-match homestand concludes Tuesday, Oct. 17 as the Mustangs close out their non-conference slate against Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at SMUMustangs.com and admission is free.

Those things carry tiny monitors that track how far they run, how many steps, heart rate, etc. More and more teams are using them now.

Thanks. When I first spotted it, my first thought was Brandi Chastain.
