SMU Loses, 3-1, At Temple Despite Double-Double By Mills

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (SMU) – The SMU volleyball suffered its second conference loss Sunday at Temple, losing 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12) in McGonigle Hall. Lauren Mills posted her league-leading 13th double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs in the loss. Brittany Adams and Kelly Brunstein also scored 12 kills each.

The Owls (12-6, 8-2 American Athletic Conference) hit .293 with 67 kills, while the Mustangs were held to a .162 attack percentage with 46 kills. SMU (14-7, 8-2 The American) trailed 11-8 in the fourth set when Temple went on a 7-1 run to take an 18-9 lead. The rally was enough to propel Temple to the 25-12 win, ending the match.

SMU finished with 11 blocks as a team, with Meryn Kennedy posting six and Lexi Nordmann adding five. Mills also assisted on four of the blocks. The Owls recorded 14 blocks. Kendall Patterson assisted on 39 of SMU's 46 kills and had seven digs. Montana Watts led SMU with 21 of 58 digs.

Temple took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-21 win in the third set. The Owls took a 16-11 lead midway through the set, and SMU was unable to complete the comeback. The Mustangs cut the lead to two several times, including 21-19, but were not able to get any closer. SMU hit .250 in the set, but Temple's .282 attack percentage combined with three blocks was enough for the win and the advantage in the match.

SMU trailed by seven, 17-10, in the first set before embarking on an 8-1 run to tie the score at 18-18. Three serves later, the Mustangs took their first lead of the set, 20-19. Mills scored all five of her kills during the rally. An ace by Patterson gave SMU a 21-19 lead, but Temple came back with three points of its own to recapture the lead, 22-21. After Adams scored her fourth kill of the set to make it 24-23, giving SMU the first chance to win the set, the Owls scored three consecutive kills to win, 26-24.

The Mustangs had to come back in the second set, but this time they held on to win the set, 25-23, and tie the match at one set apiece. SMU trailed 19-14, but scored six-in-a-row to take a 20-19 lead. Adams scored a kill and then combined with Nordmann for a block, giving SMU a 24-21 lead. Temple answered with a pair of kills before Adams score to give SMU the win.

SMU returns home to host Cincinnati Thursday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs also face East Carolina Saturday at 1 p.m. in Moody Coliseum during the homestand.
