Hegarty Scores 12 Kills To Lead SMU To Sweep At Tulane
Mustangs Host Temple Thursday

NEW ORLEANS (SMU) – SMU defeated Tulane in straight sets Sunday (25-15, 25-18, 25-18) led by Katie Hegarty's 12 kills. The senior committed just two errors, hitting .556 in the win. With the victory, SMU improved to 18-7 overall and 12-2 in the American Athletic Conference.

The Mustangs needed a late run in the third set to complete the sweep, outscoring the Green Wave (13-14, 2-12 The American) 8-1 on the final nine serves, breaking a 17-17 tie for the 25-18 win to end the match.

Lauren Mills scored nine kills, and Brittany Adams added seven. Meryn Kennedy posted seven blocks, including two solo blocks, and scored five kills. Kelly Brunstein also scored six kills on eight attacks, hitting .625. Montana Watts had 13 of SMU's 49 digs, while freshman Julia DiBona had 10 digs. As a team, the Mustangs hit .347 with 42 kills and only nine errors. SMU finished with eight blocks.

After Tulane scored the first two points of the match, SMU rallied for seven straight to take a 7-2 lead. The Mustangs' advantage was never in dangers as SMU easily won the first set, 25-15. Hegarty led the charge with four kills, and Brunstein was a perfect 3-for-3 on the attack. SMU hit .464 as a team in the set with 14 kills. Tulane scored 13 kills, but SMU held the Green Wave to a .147 attack percentage.

SMU took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 win in the second set. It was another fast start, with the Mustangs taking a 5-2 lead with three kills and a block. Leading by one point, 5-4, SMU went on a 10-2 run for a 15-6 lead. Tulane cut the lead to five, but never got any closer. SMU hit .324 with 15 kills for the win, led by Adams and Mills who each had four in the set.

The Mustangs return home to host Temple Thursday at 7 p.m. The match starts a stretch of five home matches in the last six matches of the regular season.
