SMU Swimming Coach, Coach Mac, has passed.

Postby Water Pony » Thu Nov 09, 2017 1:23 pm

Yesterday, SMU reported that Coach George "Mac" McMillion died on November 7th, which was days after the opening and dedication of new Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium last Friday.

Coach Mac was my Freshman Swim Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach during my four years. A true gentleman and life coach, he was responsible for building on the rich swimming & diving originally created by Coach "Red" Barr. On a personal note, Coach Mac maintained a close connection with former swimmers and was a strong advocate for the new aquatic center. He kept this vision alive for decades and helped organized donors until the full funding, $22m, was achieved.

The SMU press release reminds us of all of our Olympians, All-Americans, Conference Championships and Lettermen, who swam in Perkins Natatorium and beyond.

A sad day, but one filled with admiration. My deepest sympathies to his family and all his friends of SMU Swimming.

It's time to come back into the Top Ten swimming world to honor him.

Along with Red Barr he taught me how to swim at about 6 years old- I guess we have 2,999 loyal real fans left as he was always at just about every SMU Football and Basketball game. Someone got to step up and take his place. An SMU Legend

My feelings exactly. Being in a Top Ten Team was our historical position in college swimming. During my three varsity years, SMU Swimming & Diving was ranked #5, #7 and #5 in the country.

So, honoring all Coaches and Alumni by rebuilding and claiming our national reputation is the goal.

And, Stallion, I wholeheartedly agree that true fans attend FB and BB games. Coach Mac was always there. Coach Mac was true Red & Blue as an All-American SMU Swimmer in the mid-50's and a legendary coach of championships and champions. Thanks for recognizing him in the stands.

The last few years Coach Mac sat in the row and seat right in front of me at the football games. Hardly ever missed a game. Always had a multitude of folks stop by during the game to say hi to him. Will miss seeing him.
When will I start feeling stimulated??
