Mustangs at No. 3 in latest NCEA Farnam Poll

WACO, Texas (SMU/NCEA) – After winning the 2017 Masterson Farms Invitational, SMU earned its highest ranking in program history of No. 3 in the latest National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) Farnam Poll. The Mustangs are also the first team outside of the SEC or Big 12 conferences to earn a spot in the top three.

"We just need to keep our heads down and continue moving forward into the spring,” SMU head coach Carol Gwin said. “While we have had an outstanding fall season, the best in program history, we have another half of a year to keep excelling."

The Mustangs moved up from No. 4 thanks to a pair of wins on the road against two conference opponents. At the Invitational, SMU defeated Delaware State 8-7 on day one, before an 8-7 victory against No. 10 UT Martin to claim the title.

With the pair of victories, SMU earned its best start to a season (5-0) in program history and set the program record with five straight wins. To open the season, the Mustangs won three-straight home meets to jump into the top five. SMU downed then-No. 6 TCU, 11-8, before edging then-No. 7 Baylor 10-10 (1510-1464) in a tie-break decision. The Mustangs rounded out the three-meet homestand with an 11-9 win against then-No. 4 Oklahoma State.

SMU kicks off the spring season on February 16 at the Fresno Invitational. SMU will compete against Oklahoma State in the opening round.

I was in upstate NY a few years ago and Skidmore College really brags about its equestrian program. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they're in Saratoga Springs. Same with schools in KY. It seems like SMU and TCU would be the top programs in the Southwest. Maybe Tulane if they can field the sport or places with land that can house equestrian centers.

The MUSTANGS ought to be great at equestrian. :D
