SMU Wins 3-1 At Tulsa; Hosts Tulsa Friday At 2 p.m.

TULSA, Okla. (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team secured its fifth straight top-two finish in the American Athletic Conference with a 3-1 victory at Tulsa Wednesday (24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21). The Mustangs won back-to-back league titles in 2015 and 2016. SMU (21-9, 15-4 The American) would claim sole possession of second place in The American with a win against Tulsa Friday.

Brittany Adams led the Mustangs with 15 and had 14 kills for her 13th double-double of the season. Lauren Mills and Kelly Brunstein each scored 11 kills, and Mills had 15 digs for her 19th double-double of the season. Brunstein posted six blocks, and Meryn Kennedyrecorded eight of SMU's 13 blocks. Kennedy and Lexi Nordmann each finished with seven kills. Montana Watts finished with a match-high 27 digs.

SMU ended the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth set. The Mustangs trailed 17-13 before Nordmann scored two kills and Adams had one in the middle for a 3-0 run to cut the lead to one. After a Tulsa kill, Adams scored again, and then the Mustangs posted consecutive blocks to take the lead, 19-18. SMU pushed the lead to 23-19 with a stretch of three straight kills and held on for the win.

The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-23 victory in the third set. A 4-1 run midway through the set gave SMU a 14-11 lead that it would not relinquish. The Mustangs led by four, 20-16, before the Golden Hurricane (14-17, 4-7 The American) went on a 5-1 run to tie the score, 21-21. Kennedy's kill kept SMU in front, and Brunstein scored on SMU's second set-point opportunity for the win.

SMU led 24-22 in the first set, but Tulsa scored four unanswered to come back for a 26-24 victory. SMU trailed 17-13, but had a 4-0 run of its own to tie the score at 17 apiece. The Mustangs recaptured the lead, 21-20, after Tulsa committed back-to-back attack errors. Mills later scored a pair of kills to give SMU the first chance to win the set before the Golden Hurricane's final surge for the win. Mills had five kills in the set, and SMU hit .256 with 14 kills, but Tulsa scored 17 kills despite a .186 attack percentage in the victory.

It was almost like déjà vu all over again in the second set. SMU led 24-22, and Tulsa scored to get within one. This time, however, Adams found a hole in the Tulsa defense on the attack for her third kill of the set, giving SMU a 25-23 win to knot the match at one set apiece. The Mustangs trailed 15-10 midway through the set, but rallied back to take the lead, 19-18, SMU's first lead since holding a 5-4 advantage. SMU kept the Golden Hurricane from retaking the lead down the stretch, breaking the final tie, 21-21, with an Adams kill.

The Mustangs conclude the regular season at home Friday, hosting Tulsa at 2 p.m. in Moody Coliseum. This is the first time since back-to-back matches at Southern Miss in November 2011 that SMU has faced the same opponent in consecutive matches.

If they win Friday, do you think that they have a shot at an at large bid this year?

Tulsa won pretty easily today. Tough finish. Hate having to play someone back to back like that.
