Nelson, Cichero Selected In 2018 MLS SuperDraft

PHILADELPHIA (MLS/SMU) – SMU's Michael Nelson and Mauro Cichero were selected in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft Friday. Nelson was selected 20th overall by the Houston Dynamo and Cichero was picked 29th overall by FC Dallas. This is the eighth time the Mustangs have had multiple picks in the MLS SuperDraft.

Nelson earned his third consecutive American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year honor after helping the Mustangs secure the 2017 American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament third round for the second time in three seasons. In 2017, the Katy, Texas, native recorded a 17-3-1 record behind 10 shutouts (1st AAC, 10th NCAA), and a 0.60 goals against average (1st AAC, 12th NCAA). He averaged 0.48 shutouts per game (1st AAC), and .840 save percentage (1st AAC). During his tenure at SMU, he recorded a 47-20-7 record in 7009:31 between the posts, with 27 career shutouts and 272 saves.

Cichero, the 2017 AAC Midfielder of the Year and unanimous first-team all-conference selection, helped the Mustangs win The American regular season and tournament titles with nine goals and seven assists in 2017. The Norman, Oklahoma, native was named a Hermann Trophy semifinalist for the second time in his career. During his career, Cichero logged over 3,000 minutes in 68 games. He tallied 69 points, behind 24 career goals and 21 assists.

The duo will join Mustang teammate Jordan Cano in the MLS, as Cano signed a Homegrown contract with FC Dallas on Jan. 11.

The Mustangs finished the season 17-3-1 and ranked No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches' Poll. After becoming the first team to win both the American Athletic Conference Regular Season and Tournament titles in 2017, the Mustangs advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the 23rd time and the second time in the last three years (2015, 2017).
