Mustangs Add Merchant To 2018 Freshman Class

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball program added Bria' Merchant to the 2018 roster after the Houston native signed a National Letter of Intent Wednesday. The defensive specialist was a four-year letterwinner at Dulles High School in Sugar Land, Texas.

Merchant earned first-team all-district and academic all-district honors in each of her four seasons. As a senior, she was named district Defensive Player of the Year, and she earned district Newcomer of the Year accolades as a freshman in 2014. She recorded over 1,000 digs during four seasons at Dulles High School and averaged over two kills per set. As a libero, Merchant helped lead the Houston Juniors 18 Elite team to the 2017 national championship.

The signing of Merchant takes SMU's 2018 class to five freshman along with Rachel Woulfe, Hannah Jacobs, Ryan Palmieri and Lily Heim. The class joins an SMU program that has advanced to the postseason each of the last three seasons. The Mustangs won the American Athletic Conference championship in 2015 and 2016, while finishing as runner up in 2013, 2014 and 2017. SMU defeated Texas A&M to advance to the NCAA Tournament second round in 2016, and has won at least 20 matches in each of the last five seasons.
