Equestrian Advances in All Four Event Championships on Day One of NCEA Championships

WACO, Texas (SMU) –The SMU equestrian team was firing on all cylinders Wednesday, as all four disciplines won and advanced to the quarterfinals of the event championships.

The day opened with equitation over fences, where SMU rolled to a 3-1 victory over United Equestrian Conference (UEC)-foe Delaware State. Brett Burlington opened scoring with a 155-146 win over Sydney Wicklund. Nora Gray, the UEC Fences Rider of the Year, toppled Rachel Dantley, 149-118, before Vivian Yowan scored a 170, to down Zoe Kirsch, 170-144.

Next up was reining, where the Mustangs registered a 3-1 win over West Texas A&M. Madison Steed opened the event with a 135-134.5 win over Sunnie Winn, before senior Keagan Snively defeated Kendall Woellmer, 138.5-136.5. Sophomore Holly Lansidel secured the win for the reining corp with a 143.5-142.5 win over Maggie Murphy.

In Equitation on the Flat, SMU knocked off Baylor, 2-1. Haley Zimmerman picked up the Mustangs' first point with a 149-144 decision over Brittney Mirkov. Yowan downed Madison Day, 158-154, to pick up her second win of the day and secure the discipline. Kirsten Ostling, the UEC Flat Freshman of the Year, scored a 149, but was matched by Rachel Van Allen.

The horsemanship corp advanced to the quarterfinals following a 3-1 win over UT Martin. Kara Vickery registered a 146.5-140 win over Bailey Newlan, before Haylee Schoonover defeated Devon Woods, 147.5-144.5. Junior Ashley Mauney closed out the day with a 149-146.5 win over Lucy Eier.

The fifth-seeded Mustangs begin the team championship Thursday at 8:35 a.m. against No. 4-seed and defending National Champions Texas A&M.

CHANGES TO 2018 NCEA CHAMPIONSHIP:
New this year, there are a total of six NCEA National Titles and one National Championship Team Title up for grabs in the 2018 NCEA Nationals Championships.

NCEA National Championship Team Title—The top 8 teams will be competing in the NCEA National Championship Team Title. Each team will compete head to head with 4 riders in each of the Events; Equitation Over Fences and Equitation on the Flat for the Hunt Seat events and Reining and Horsemanship for the Western events. The team that receives the most points (16 possible points available for each matchup) will advance to the next day. The team competition begins on Thursday with the quarterfinals and the semifinals. The conclusion of the team events run on championship Saturday.

NCEA National Championship Event Titles—The top 16 teams will compete in separate brackets for each event; Equitation over Fences, Equitation on the Flat, Horsemanship and Reining starting on Wednesday, April 18 with the first round of action. Each event quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on Friday, April 20 and the finals for each event will take place on Championship Saturday following the Team Overall National Championship.

NCEA National Championship Discipline Titles for Hunt Seat and Western: The combined points each team accrues in the NCEA Hunter Seat Discipline Competitions (Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat) and the NCEA Western Discipline Competitions (Horsemanship and Reining) will determine the Overall Discipline titles.

Event Champion: 11 points
Event Runner Up: 7 points
Semi-Finalist: 4 points
Quarter-Finalist: 2 points
