Mustangs Add Lobato And Pernecky; Signing Class At Seven

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball program added two more players to the 2018 roster with the addition of Sydney Lobato and Maddie Pernecky. The duo brings the 2018 class to seven freshmen, as Pernecky and Lobato join Rachel Woulfe, Hannah Jacobs, Ryan Palmieri, Bria Merchant and Lily Heim.

Lobato, a 5-10 setter from Las Vegas, Nev., is a four-year letterwinner at Bishop Gorman High School. As a junior, Lobato led her team to the state championship for the first time in school history, earning first-team all-region honors. She is a three-time recipient of the Scholar Athlete award and three-time Nevada All-State Academic Team honoree. She recorded nearly 2,000 assists, finishing with 1,992 and averaging 6.4 per set while playing in a 6-2 system. She also had 440 digs and 180 aces.

She started each of the past three seasons as a setter for the Vegas Aces 18s club team, earning a bid to the 2018 national championships after winning the gold division at the SCVA Qualifier in Anaheim, Calif. In 2016, her club team finished fourth in the gold division at the Houston qualifier and was ranked in the top 20 in the SCVA California one-day tournament season. She also played soccer and competed in swimming and track and field at Bishop Gorman.

Pernecky is a three-year letterwinner at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Canada, Calif. She was named to the all-league second team as a senior after earning an honorable mention selection after her junior season. The defensive specialist finished her career with 808 digs in three seasons, averaging 4.0 per set as a senior. She was a member of a league champion squad in 2015.

As a member of the San Gabriel Elite club team, she led her team to a bronze medal at the 2013 junior national championships. Her team also won the gold medal at the 2015 SCVA junior nationals qualifier and a silver medal at the tournament in 2016.

The class joins an SMU program that has advanced to the postseason each of the last three seasons. The Mustangs won the American Athletic Conference championship in 2015 and 2016, while finishing as runner up in 2013, 2014 and 2017. SMU defeated Texas A&M to advance to the NCAA Tournament second round in 2016, and has won at least 20 matches in each of the last five seasons.
