Ben Johnson Returns As Assistant Coach
Johnson Helped Develop Seven Newcomers Last Season in First Year on Hilltop

DALLAS (SMU) – Ben Johnson will return to his role as Assistant Coach with SMU Men's Tennis for the 2018-19 season, head coach Grant Chen announced Friday.

"I'm very excited to partner with Ben Johnson and have him remain on the SMU coaching staff," said Chen. "We have had the opportunity the past few weeks to share our ideas and vision for the program and the direction we want to work towards."

Johnson helped develop seven newcomers in 2017-18 during his first year as an assistant coach at SMU, but his coaching accolades extend well beyond just SMU.

Johnson spent seven years as the head coach of the men's tennis program at Richmond, where he was a two-time Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year. He helped guide the Spiders to 100 wins in seven years, including a program record 25 in 2017, when Richmond earned the top seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament.

Prior to his time at Richmond, Johnson spent three seasons as the top assistant at Davidson, served as the Co-Founder and Director of Birmingham's Elite Tennis Academy in Birmingham, Alabama and was the Co-Founder and Director of Junior Development at Revolution Tennis Academy, also in Birmingham.

"He did a terrific job as Head Coach at Richmond and this past season with the SMU," said Chen. "This is the start of a new era for the Mustangs and we are eager to start the new season."
