Equestrian Promotes McKenzie Lantz to Associate Head Coach

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Equestrian Head Coach Carol Gwin has promoted McKenzie Lantz to associate head coach.

"McKenzie had an incredible first year with us last season and made quite the impact on our program," Gwin said. "McKenzie has proven herself to be a talented coach, a relentless recruiter, and an example of how successful our student-athletes can be. It's no secret that she had multiple offers to go work at SEC schools this summer, and the fact that she chose to stay here says a lot about the direction that our program is headed in and her commitment to SMU. I am excited that we'll be able to keep McKenzie for many years to come, and I know that we are closer than ever to competing for a national championship."

In her first season leading SMU's western team, Lantz helped coach the Mustangs to the program's first ever United Equestrian Conference championship. SMU's horsemanship and reining squads had their best seasons in school history last year, highlighted by sophomore, Holly Lansidel earning both Ariat First Team All-America honors as well as the NCEA Reining rider of the Year by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association. Lansidel went 15-2-1 last year as a sophomore and is the first SMU western rider to be named for either award.

In addition to Lansidel's success, Lantz coached rising senior Madison Steed to a championship at last month's National Reining Horse Association's Collegiate Challenge in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Before joining the SMU staff in August 2017, Lantz served as western coach at Fresno State for two seasons. She also was a volunteer coach at the University of Georgia during the 2015 postseason, helping lead the Bulldogs to the Southeastern Conference Championship.

SMU begins the 2018-19 season with an exhibition against Baylor at the Dallas Equestrian Center on Sept. 14.
