Mustang Pair Receives Preseason All-Conference Awards

PROVIDENCE, RI (SMU) - SMU junior forward Garrett McLaughlin claimed the American Athletic Conference's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year award along with being named to the All-Conference Team with senior midfielder Emil Cuello. The Mustangs were also voted as the No. 2 team in the conference.

McLaughlin led the AAC in scoring last season, finding the back of the net 14 times, and accumulated a conference leading 31 points. The Oklahoma City, Okla. native was also First-Team All-AAC for the 2017 season. Cuello was the team's third leading point getter with nine total and the Orem, Utah native netted two goals during the conference tournament, both game winners, helping him win the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player distinction. His five assists were the fourth most in the AAC.

This is the fourth consecutive year that a Mustang has made the preseason all-conference list and the second straight year for McLaughlin. He joins Mauro Cichero as the only SMU players to earn the AAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year award.

The No. 8 ranked Ponies season kicks off at home Friday, August 24 at 7:30 p.m. against Providence.
