Women's soccer wins, 2-1, at Rice

HOUSTON (SMU) - Allie Thornton sent home a late go-ahead goal as the SMU Women’s Soccer team beat Rice, 2-1, on the road Thursday from Holloway Field.
With the win, SMU improved to 2-1-0, while Rice remains winless through two contests.

SMU wasted no time opening the scoring against the Owls. Freshman Courtney Sebazco registered her first collegiate goal in the 10th minute after collecting a solid pass from Blair Thorpe that began with Celiana Torres. Samantha Estrada, in goal for the first half, fended off a few good Owl chance before the intermission.

Looking to tie it up, Rice came up empty with lots of second-half opportunities before scoring the equalizer in the 66th minute. There wasn’t much keeper Catie Brown could do to stop a well-placed shot from Rice’s Delaney Schultz.

After Brown survived more Owl attempts for the go-ahead, the Mustangs took advantage of a lot of empty space down near the goal as Isabelle Nashmi sent one into the goal area. Thornton controlled the ball and ripped it past the keeper for the clutch late tally coming with 13 minutes left in the game. The score gave the junior striker three of SMU’s four goals on the season.

The Mustangs maintained the advantage for the final few minutes securing the hard-fought road win over their old conference rival.

Altogether, the Mustangs were outshot by the Owls 16-10. SMU used their shots on goal efficiently as their only two resulted in the two scores, Rice had five shots with one goal, giving the Brown-Estrada combo five saves in the game. The Mustangs did have the edge in corners, 4-2.

With a win against the Owls, the Mustangs lead the all-time series 13-6-4. Thursday marked the first meeting between the programs since SMU moved to the American Athletic Conference.

SMU wraps up their three-game road swing with as they make the journey to cross-town rival TCU. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on Sunday from Fort Worth.
