Volleyball falls to Iowa, 3-1

SMU Loses 3-1 Against Iowa Saturday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (SMU) – Freshman Rachel Woulfeled SMU with 14 kills in a 3-1 loss to Iowa at Lipscomb Saturday. Ryan Palmieri was one kill away from the season's first double-double with nine kills and 11 digs.

The duo, along with Lily Heim, gave SMU three freshmen in the starting lineup. Heim finished the match with 23 assists and six digs. Kendall Pattersonhad 17 assists and eight digs with SMU running a 6-2. Brittany Adams and Kelly Brunstein each added 11 kills for SMU.

Montana Watts was named to the all-tournament team, averaging 5.71 digs per set for the tournament. The junior tallied 23 against the Hawkeyes.

Iowa closed out the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set. SMU dropped to 0-2, while it was the first match of the season for the Hawkeyes. The Mustangs scored the first four points of the final set, but Iowa rallied to take the lead with a 4-0 run of its own for an 11-8 advantage. SMU tied the score two more times, but could not retake the lead.

Brunstein scored seven kills in the second set to lead SMU to a 25-21 win. Trailing 17-16, the Mustangs scored four unanswered, with two by Brunstein, to take a 20-17 lead. The Hawkeyes scored just one more kill as SMU held on to tie the match, 1-1. SMU outscored Iowa 18-12 on the attack, hitting .262 in the second set.

Iowa took advantage of five SMU service errors and 10 attack errors in a four-point win in the third, 25-21, for a 2-1 lead in the match. SMU survived errors on the first three points, with Woulfe scoring kills on two of the next three points to tie the score. The Mustangs were never able to capture the lead, however. Trailing by two, 15-13, SMU scored just one of the next five points as Iowa took a 19-14 lead en route to the win.

The Hawkeyes won the first set, 25-17, holding SMU to a .098 attack percentage while hitting .342 with 16 kills. Woulfe led SMU with four kills in the first set.

SMU hosts its first home match Friday at 12:30 p.m. against NC State. The Mustangs will also face Arkansas State and No. 13 Creighton in the SMU DoubleTree Classic.
