Men's soccer blanks Incarnate Word, 1-0 (with VIDEO)

SMU men’s soccer head coach Kevin Hudson and defender Talen Maples visited with PonyFans.com after Maples scored and the Mustangs pitched their second straight shutout in a 1-0 win over Incarnate Word at Westcott Field.

Mustangs Top Incarnate Word 1-0 For 15th Win In Past 16 Matches At Westcott Field

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU made it 15 wins in the last 16 outings at Westcott Field with a 1-0 victory against Incarnate Word on Friday night. Talen Maples scored SMU's only goal in the 60' minute as he collected the loose ball about eight yards from the center of the goal and fired it over UIW's Carlos Mercado.

The Mustangs (2-1) finished the game with an 18-11 shot advantage over UIW (0-3), with 12 of the chances coming in the second half. Ten of the 18 field players for SMU too a shot. Christian Boroom led the way with four attempts while Nicky Hernandez (3), Akean Shackleford (3) and Emil Cuello (2) also had multiple attempts.

For Maples, it was his second straight game with a goal and the third score of his career. Grant Makela started at goalkeeper for SMU and recorded his second straight shutout, getting four saves in the triumph.

SMU hosts Denver at Westcott Field on Monday at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
