SMU Sweeps Arkansas State For Split On First Day Of DoubleTree Classic

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team swept Arkansas State in its second match of the day to go 1-1 in the SMU DoubleTree Classic Friday. Brittany Adams scored 11 kills to lead the Mustangs (1-3) against the Red Wolves after scoring 13 kills in four-set loss to NC State earlier in the day.

The Mustangs outlasted Arkansas State for a 31-29 victory in the first set. It was the longest set at SMU since the NCAA dropped the winning score from 30 points to 25 prior to the 2008 season. Out of subs, SMU was forced to play the final six points with two setters on the floor. The score was tied, 27-27, when Kendall Patterson returned to the court to serve, with freshman setter Lily Heim going to the front row for the first time all season.

Arkansas State scored the next point for its second chance to win the set, but Adams came through with a kill on the next play. The two teams traded points one more time before Heim recorded a block and Patterson recorded a kill to give SMU back-to-back points for the win.

Adams had 13 digs to go with her 11 kills for the first double-double of the season. Kelly Brunstein added nine kills for SMU against the Red Wolves. Montana Watts finished the day with 37 digs in seven set, tallying 20 against NC State and 17 against Arkansas State. Patterson had 21 assists against the Red Wolves and 22 against the Wolfpack.

SMU rode the momentum from the first set to a 5-1 lead in the second set. Arkansas State never led as the Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 victory. The Mustangs finished the sweep for their first win of the season with a 25-14 victory in the third set. SMU took a 6-2 lead to start the set and kept the Red Wolves from threating late in the set for the win.

Against NC State, the Mustangs scored a 25-21 victory in the second set, but the Wolfpack came back in the third for a 25-23 win in the third. The advantage propelled NC State to a 25-20 win in the fourth set to take the match.

SMU hosts No. 15 Creighton Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the final match of the DoubleTree Classic. The Bluejays swept both Arkansas State and NC State Friday.
