Cross Country Wins Season's First Event

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU Cross Country opened the season with a first-place finish at the Bear Twilight Invite in Waco with junior Hannah Miller and senior Svenja Ojstersek coming across the line in first and second respectively.

"It was a really good way to start to the season," said 17th-year head coach Cathy Casey. " It was good to have Hannah and Svenja work together, I think the whole team was trying to key off each other and keep the pack as close as we can. A lot of girls ran really well even with the heat. This was a knock-the-rust-off race but the girls know this course in and out, they've run it three times. We'll use it as an indicator and we'll keep moving forward. The future looks good for SMU."

This was the Mustangs seventh straight season starting the season in Waco and were able to best their previous best showing of second place at the event which took place at the Heart of Texas complex in Waco. The Mustangs held a nine-point edge on hosts Baylor and a 12 point cushion on third-place TCU.

Miller's time of 13:18.7 was the fastest 4K time in program history by a whopping 24 seconds. Also topping the previous best, Ojstersek came in at 13:23.4. The pair were a nearly a half-minute clear of the third-place finisher.

The Mustangs made up four of the top nine as Anneke Grogan and Charlotte-Tara Murphy finished in fifth and ninth. Additionally, Robin Montemayor came in 28th while Alison Esparza occupied 41st. In her first collegiate race, freshman Olivia Lackner brought home 21st place with a time 14.50.4.

SMU Cross Country returns to action at the Ken Garland Invite, set for Sep. 15 from Denton, Texas.
