Fleet's Game-Winner Pushes SMU Past HBU

DALLAS (SMU) – Hannah Fleet scored the go-ahead goal in the 82nd minute as SMU topped Houston Baptist, 2-1, at Westcott Field Sunday night.

In their return from a three-game road trip, the Mustangs faced off with HBU for the first meeting between the two schools in 30 years. Neither team could find anything in the first half of play though SMU held the advantage in shots.

Going against a stiff wind in the second half, the Mustangs still managed to create great chances. It was Mary Meehan's cross in the 51st minute that whipped into the box near the feet of Celiana Torres. The freshman, Torres, collected the ball and calmly netted her second career goal.

HBU answered quickly as in the 57th minute when a loose ball in front of goal was kneed home by Jessica Nevils for an equalizer.

The Mustangs would hit the post several times looking for the difference-making goal that didn't come until the final 10 minutes. Haley Thompson took the corner from the near side of the field, delivering the ball right into traffic. After a deflection or two, Hannah Fleet found the ball and put the Mustangs in front.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 3-1-1 and the Huskies fall to 2-3-0. SMU split the time in goal tonight between Catie Brown (first half) and Samantha Estrada (second half). The Mustangs racked up 27 shots and limited HBU to just six.

Women's Soccer actions returns to Westcott Field on Sunday with anther 7 p.m. kickoff. The Mustangs square off with the Panthers of FIU in the final home non-conference contest.
