Brunstein Leads SMU In Loss At TCU Thursday

FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – Kelly Brunstein led SMU with 10 kills and recorded five blocks in a 3-1 loss at TCU Thursday night (25-23, 25-21, 25-27, 25-21).

The Horned Frogs (5-3) ended the match in the fourth set with a 25-21 victory. SMU had five of its seven freshmen on the floor together at points during the final set, and nearly forced a fifth set. Trailing 21-17, the Mustangs rallied to cut the lead to one, 21-20. After the two teams traded points, TCU scored three straight for the win.

Rachel Woulfe scored nine kills, and Lexi Nordmannfinished with eight kills and hit a team-best .368. Nordmann also accounted for six of SMU's 10 blocks. Ryan Palmieri and Meryn Kennedy added seven kills each. SMU matched TCU with 71 digs, led by Montana Watts' match-high 23 digs.

Hannah Jacobs scored her fifth kill of the set to win the third set for SMU, 27-25. The Mustangs scored 19 kills in the set to avoid the sweep, with five by Brunstein and four from Nordmann. SMU erased a three-point deficit with three straight kills to tie the score, 13-13. The Mustangs held the advantage for a majority of the late serves, but it was the Horned Frogs with the first chance at set point. Jacobs scored a kill to tie the score, 24-24. Two points later the freshman went back-to-back for the win.

TCU scored four of the first five points in the first set. The lead was five just a few serves later, 8-3. The Horned Frogs maintained the sizeable advantage until the late stages of the set, enjoying a six-point lead, 21-15. SMU scored four of the next five points with three kills, fighting back to force TCU into a timeout.

The Mustangs (1-5) remained hot at the next, cutting the lead to one, 23-22, and TCU called a second timeout. Kennedy posted another block coming out of the break to even the score, 23-23. TCU scored kills on the next two serves to end the set with a 25-23 victory. Brunstein and Woulfe each scored four kills to lead the SMU offense, which outhit TCU .222-.176.

The Mustangs took their first lead in the match at 7-6 in the second when Bria' Merchant served an ace to cap off a 3-0 run. The Horned Frogs scored the next two kills to retake the lead, an advantage they would not relinquish again. SMU remained within striking distance for the remained of the set, but Anna Walsh scored seven kills in the set to keep TCU in front for a 25-21 win.

SMU faces Montana State Friday at 3 p.m. before concluding action in the Fight in the Fort Saturday against Louisiana.
