Mustangs Improve to 5-1-1 with 4-0 Shutout of Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. (SMU) – The Mustangs secured their best start to a season since 1995 with a 4-0 road win over the Northern Colorado Bears on Thursday night.

The Mustangs did what they've been doing all season and got on top early with multiple goals. Celiana Torres had the game's first score coming in the 14th minute. Torres gathered a poor clearance by the Bear keeper and, after a few dribbles, notched her third goal of the season.

In the 18th minute, the Mustangs drew a foul in the goal area and called on Allie Thornton to take her second PK attempt of 2018. The junior striker made it 2-0 with her fourth goal of the season.

Courtney Sebazco continued her hot streak with a goal in the 26th minute. The freshman pressured the keeper and took a deflection off the body that soared towards the goal. Sebazco chased it down and kicked the ball in from close range for good measure.

SMU starting keeper Catie Brown came up huge in the 31st minute making a diving save on an Northern Colorado PK attempt. Samantha Estrada replaced Brown midway through the second half. The pair combined for the first Mustang shutout of the season.

Hannah Allred scored in back-to-back games when she scored off a rebounded shot late in the second half for the final tally of the contest. With the loss, the Bears move to an even 4-4 on the season and SMU improves to 5-1-1.

Next up, the Mustangs conclude their two-game Rocky Mountain swing with a 1 p.m. C.T. Sunday contest against Colorado State.
