Senior Day Ends In 2-1 Loss to No. 18 Memphis

DALLAS (SMU) – The Mustangs dropped a heartbreaker, 2-1, to No. 18 Memphis on Senior Day at Westcott Field.

The first half looked promising for the Mustangs as they were able to generate a goal in the 10th minutes. SMU strung together a series of passes in the attacking third ending with Torres finding Bishop who played the ball to Blair Thorpe down the right side. Thorpe, the senior playing in her last game at Westcott, fired one from near the corner of the goal area that sailed over the keeper to beat the vaunted Memphis Defense.

The Tiger defense came into the game as one of the strongest in the country, recording an incredible 10 shutouts in 12 games. Before the conclusion of the fist period the Mustang D made a series of remarkable plays to deny Memphis from close range, the sequence included a pair of saves by keeper Catie Brown and a goal-preventing block on the goal line from Mary Meehan.

In the second half, the Tigers generated a run of corners in the early minutes, eventually finding the net with Elizabeth Woerner scoring on an assist from Olivia Gauthier. Memphis went ahead four minutes later with the score beginning after a takeaway near midfield leading to a breakaway. The conference's leading scorer, Clarissa Larisey, went around the keeper for the go-ahead finish.

SMU couldn't match the goal in the final 30 minutes of the contest, extending Memphis' winning streak to 10. The Mustang's fell to 8-5-1 on the season, and finished 2018 with a 5-2 record at Westcott Field. The Tigers improved to 12-1 and stayed undefeated in conference.

After the game. the four seniors, Vanessa Valadez, Blair Thorpe, Haley Thompson and Catie Brown were honored on the field by the fans, coaching staff and teammates for their Mustang careers.
