Palmieri Scores Season High In Loss At Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – Ryan Palmieri scored a season-high 16 kills to lead SMU Sunday afternoon. The freshman was the only attacker in double figures for the Mustangs as Memphis delivered SMU its second straight five-set loss on the road (27-25, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-13).

The Tigers (9-10, 2-5 The American) led 8-7 at the switch in the fifth set, and stretched the lead to three, 11-8. SMU fought off two match points with a kill by Meryn Kennedy and a block from Lexi Nordmann and Eva Linden. The Mustangs had a chance to tie the score, but Brittany Adams' attack landed just past the end line to end the match.

Adams, Nordmann and Linden all finished with eight kills for the Mustangs (6-11, 3-4 The American), and Kennedy added seven. Montana Watts finished with 28 digs. Lily Heim added 14 digs with 16 assists, and Kendall Patterson recorded 33 assists with 13 digs.

The Mustangs won the fourth set, 25-22, to force a fifth set for the second straight match. SMU scored three straight late to take a 21-18 lead. Memphis scored on the first set-point attempt by the Mustangs, but SMU got the point on the next serve for the win. The score was tied 15 times in the set, and neither team led by more than two until the late 3-0 run by the Mustangs.

SMU held off a late charge by Memphis to win the second set, 25-23. The Mustangs broke an 8-8 tie with a 12-3 run, taking a 20-11. The set was anything but over. The Tigers answered with a 15-4 run, cutting the lead to one, 24-23. After an SMU timeout, Palmieri ended the threat with her seventh kill of the set.

Memphis took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-20 win in the third set. The Mustangs led 16-13, but the Tigers scored the next six points, taking a 19-16 lead. SMU was unable to recapture the advantage.

The Tigers erased four SMU set-point attempts during a 6-1 run to win the first set, 27-25. With the score tied, 18-18, SMU scored three straight for the advantage. The lead was still three after Palmieri scored to make it 24-21 in favor of SMU. The Tigers scored with four kills and an ace during the late run for the win.
