Akean Shackleford Leads The Mustangs To 600th Win In Program History

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU men's soccer became the 25th program in NCAA history to reach 600 programs wins with its 3-1 win over American Athletic Conference opponent Cincinnati Saturday night at Westcott Field in Dallas.

"We are thrilled to win the 600th game in program history," said Head Coach Kevin Hudson. "All of the credit goes to the alums and coaches who came before us and established a winning culture. We hope to continue to push the program forward to many more wins."

Junior Akean Shackleford scored twice for his fourth and fifth goals of the season to give SMU the win, both on assists from junior Eddie Munjoma. The Jamaican forward finished a cross from Munjoma with a header in the 22nd minute of play. He sealed the victory in the second half with his second goal off a free kick from the McKinney, Texas native. He now ties senior Emil Cuello for most goals on the team with five.

In the 16th minute of the first half, senior midfielder Caleb Smith posted his first goal of the season on a penalty kick to put the Mustangs on the board first.

"Tonight was a very good performance," said Hudson. "We still have a lot to improve on, but the team is rounding into form at the most important time of the year. Hopefully we can continue to grow over the next few weeks with big games ahead."

SMU controlled the tempo of the game, outshooting the Bearcats 16-8 shots, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Mustangs also earned five corner kicks to Cincinnati's one.

Cincinnati found the net late in the first half to record their only goal on the night in the 39th minute.

The Mustangs' next match is Oct. 27 at 6 PM CT at UConn.
