Mustangs Sweep Tulsa For Fifth Straight Home Win

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team defeated Tulsa in straight sets (25-14, 26-24, 28-26) Sunday in Moody Coliseum for its fifth straight home win. Senior Brittany Adams led the attack for SMU, scoring 12 kills, and freshman Ryan Palmieri added 11.

The Mustangs (8-11, 5-4 American Athletic Conference) outlasted Tulsa (14-7, 6-3 The American) in each of the final two sets to earn the sweep. After scoring four unanswered points, Tulsa held a 24-23 lead for the second straight set. SMU fought off two set points before Kendall Patterson gave the Mustangs a 26-25 lead with an ace from the service line. Tulsa answered with a kill before Palmieri scored back-to-back kills for the win.

Palmieri hit .333, scoring double-digit kills for the third straight match. Lexi Nordmann hit .474 with 10 kills, giving SMU three attackers with at least 10 kills in the sweep. As a team, SMU hit .209 with 48 kills, while Tulsa hit .165 with 40 kills. Montana Watts recorded 26 digs. Lily Heim posted 21 assists, while Kendall Patterson finished with 18.

SMU used a 9-3 run to take a 14-6 lead in the first set, cruising to a 25-14 victory. The Mustangs hit .345, outscoring Tulsa 14-8 on the attack. Adams led the charge with six kills.

The second set had a little more drama. Trailing 24-23, SMU scored three straight points, including a pair of kills by Nordmann, to win 26-24 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Mustangs trailed 20-17, but three different Mustangs combined for three kills in a row to tie the score. However, SMU was unable to recapture the lead until the final 3-0 run for the win.

The Mustangs started the set with a 9-5 lead. Tulsa came back to tie the score, 13-13, setting up the dramatic finish. SMU scored 19 kills in the set, three more than Tulsa, with 11 assists from Heim.

SMU returns to the road, playing at USF Friday at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT. The road trip includes a match at UCF Sunday at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
