From the AAC/SMU:

ECU edges SMU in PK shootout

TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) – The Mustang's season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion after falling in PKs to ECU at the American Conference Championship.

The game required 120 minutes of action but things progressed more slowly in the first half. ECU only got off one shot in the opening period against SMU keeper Catie Brown. The SMU offense kept ECU on their toes with 8 shots but was unable to find a first-half score.

In the second period, Allie Thornton opened the scoring for the game in the 56th minute. Blair Thorpe sent one into the box that the junior striker headed home for her tenth of the season.

The Pirates evened the game up with less than 20 minutes remaining as Erin Mikalsen collected a loose corner and brought the two teams even with her first goal of the season. The game remained 1-1 at the end of regulation.

In the 20 minutes of sudden-death overtime, neither team could finish off the game. Samantha Estrada came up huge for the Mustangs on two occasions to keep the game alive. First, the freshman keeper prevented a ECU breakaway with a sliding save. In the game's final minutes, she punched a long, high shot attempt over the bar to deny a golden goal.

Both teams were credited with a draw after two overtimes but the game moved to PKs to see who would advance to the semifinals. ECU didn't miss any of their five attempts and topped SMU 5-3 from the penalty spot.

ECU will move on to face No. 16 South Florida in the semifinal on Friday.
