With aggressive and physical play, the SMU men's soccer team took advantage of scoring chances and came out with a well-deserved win against host Saint Louis Sunday by the score of 3-2 in St. Louis as part of the Saint Louis Nike Classic.

SMU evens its record to 2-2 while the Billikens lose their first game of the season and sport a 2-1 mark. Saint Louis entered Sunday's game ranked fifth in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.

Senior midfielder Matt Whiteley (Richardson, Texas) scored two goals, including the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining in the contest. Junior midfielder Mohamed Fahim (Cairo, Egypt) got SMU on the scoreboard first at 27:55 with the assist credited to junior Bret Corbin. Saint Louis knotted the game at 1-1 shortly before halftime with a 25-yard shot from Marty Tappel.

Whiteley earned his first goal of the game with a diving header off at 48:35. Corbin earned his second assist of the game. The Billikens tied the score at 2-2 with a goal by Brad Davis at 64:58. Whiteley sealed the victory for the Mustangs with a five-yard shot off a deflected SMU corner kick.

Whiteley was named "Man of the Match" by internetsoccer.com, which broadcasted the game live over the internet airwaves. Fahim was selected the Classic's Offensive Most Valuable Player and junior midfielder Carl Bussey (Plano, Texas) received Defensive MVP honors. Whiteley along with sophomore defender Tom Dolan, freshman midfielder Kevin Hudson, and junior Luchi Gonzalez were also named to the All-Tournament team.

SMU plays at home for the first time this season as host of the SMU Nike Classic this coming weekend (Sept. 15-16). Friday's games include Tulsa vs. George Mason at 5:00 p.m. with UNLV taking on the Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's contests feature Tulsa vs. UNLV at 5:00 p.m. with SMU closing out the Nike Classic against George Mason at 7:30 p.m. All games will be played at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU.

Way to go Mustangs!

I know the Ponies had a rough start to the season, but knocking off the #5 team in the country -- on THEIR field -- is the way to right the ship.

Congratulations to Coach Hyndman and his team.
