Men's Soccer rolls to Tournament Title

Postby PonyPride » Sun Sep 17, 2000 3:39 am

The SMU Men's soccer team (4-2) swept a pair of games from Nevada-Las Vegas and George Mason to win the 2000 SMU Nike Classic Tournament at SMU's Wescott Field. The Mustangs annihilated UNLV, 7-0, Friday night, and then returned Saturday to knock off a scrappy George Mason squad, 4-1.

"I think we showed tonight how good we can be when we play the way we're capable," SMU head coach Schellas Hyndman said after Friday's win over the Rebels. "When we're passing and maintaining possession like that, we can be touch."

Junior forward Mohamed Fahim was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring five goals in the two games. Four other SMU players —— midfielder Carl Bussey, midfielder Matt Whitely, defender Tom Dolan and midfielder Diego Walsh —— were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Mustangs return to action Wednesday at 7:00 when they host Midwestern State at Westcott Field.

Against UNLV, in addition to Fahim's three goals, the Ponies also got single scores from Bussey and forward Luchi Gonzalez, as well as a pair of late goals from midfielder Bret Corbin. Then, against the Patriots Saturday, the team got two goals from Fahim, one from Gonzalez and one from Walsh.

But the key to the Mustangs' success clearly was Fahim.

"He's so quick, that when he gets into a one-on-one situation, he usually takes advantage of his opportunities," Hyndman said. "He certainly did that tonight."

The only goal given up by SMU goalkeeper Byron Foss, came in the first half of Saturday's game on a penalty kick that GMU's Eduardo Lima. But just moments later, Gonzalez tied the score at 1-1 on a PK of his own.

Way to go Mustangs!

I was at both games this weekend, and the Ponies looked awesome, especially in the win over UNLV. The trio of Bussey, Fahim and Gonzalez has to be as good or better than any threesome in the country.

And GK Byron Foss is unbelievable. Looks like a defensive end, and was punting the ball 70 yards. Call Cavan - he could easily kick and punt for the football team. And can you imagine this kid (6-5, 220) coming down the field after kickoffs and drilling some poor kick returner?
