SMU junior forward Sarah Harvey fed her sister, freshman forward Kim Harvey, with what proved to be the winning goal in the 26th minute of Friday's 4-0 SMU win over Iowa State.

Each team appeared a bit sluggish at the beginning of the game, which SMU head coach George Van Linder said was a result of the Mustangs' playig down to the level of their competition.

"We really came out playing at their speed," Van Linder said after watching his squad improve to 6-2 on the season. "We talked about that at halftime, about playing the game at our speed in the second half."

Van Linder's halftime speech clearly worked as the Mustangs came out of the intermission seemingly in another gear.

In the 54th minute, junior forward Lorrie Tipton (a transfer from Utah) raced into the left corner of the Mustangs' offensive end, raced around her defender and curled a shot from a nearly impossible angle past the outstretched arms of ISU goalkeeper Beth Chapman and into the upper right corner.

Then, in the 62nd minute, senior midfielder Nicole Lamb lifted a long crossing pass from the right side, and sophomore forward out-leaped the defense to head the ball into the net.

"I didn't think we'd have this much of a margin of victory," Van Linder said. "Iowa State is a pretty decent team. But we got some great goals. Lorrie's shot from deep in the corner and Misty's goal, where she went up over the defense -- you're not going to get goals like that every game."

The Mustangs completed the scoring in the 64th minute, when Lamb pounced on a loose ball bouncing in front of the net, and buried it into the net.

"Maybe the best thing about this win was that it is Parents Weekend, and we were able to get a lot of people into the game," Van Linder said.

The Mustangs return to the field at 1 p.m. Sunday , when they host the Vanderbilt Commodores. The game is of particular interest to senior SMU goalkeeper -- a transfer from Vandy. Van Linder said Lief had one of the best games of her career last year against her old school, when she pitched a shutout in the 0-0 deadlock.
