Mustangs Defeat Wichita State In Straight Sets Sunday

WICHITA, Kan. (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team won in straight sets at Wichita State Sunday to complete the season sweep of the defending conference champion. Senior Brittany Adams led the offense with 14 kills in the win.

SMU hit .200 with 15 kills in the final set, but the defense led to the 28-26 win. The Mustangs tallied 31 of 64 digs in the third set, and posted two blocks, including one by Ryan Palmieri and Lexi Nordmann for match point. SMU's first block of the set gave the Mustangs a 24-23 lead, but Tabitha Brown scored two straight kills for the Shockers to give Wichita State a chance to extend the match. SMU took advantage of a pair of errors by the Shockers to regain the advantage. With the scored tied, 26-26, Meryn Kennedy scored a kill, setting the stage for the final point.

Hannah Jacobs scored 10 kills, and Rachel Woulfe scored nine. Lily Heim finished with 34 assists and 10 digs. Montana Watts led the way with 14 digs, while Bria' Merchant tallied 13 and Kendall Patterson added 10. SMU (11-14, 8-7 American Athletic Conference) hit .303 with 45 kills for the match, while Wichita State (12-14, 7-8 The American) scored 48 on a .273 attack percentage.

SMU took the first set, 25-23, after establishing a 16-9 lead. With an 11-8 advantage, the Mustangs went on a 5-1 run, scoring with two blocks and an ace during the stretch. The Shockers fought all the way back to within one after erasing SMU's first set-point chance. Woulfe blasted a kill on the next serve for the win.

Adams scored six kills during the second set, including the final point of the set, as SMU defeated Wichita State 26-24. With the scored tied, 23-23, an attack error long by Adams gave the Shockers a 24-23 lead. The senior came back on the next point with a kill. Kennedy and Woulfe combined for a block to give SMU the advantage before Adams knocked down a ball Wichita State misplayed to the Mustangs' side.

SMU hosts UCF Friday at 7 p.m. before celebrating Senior Day Sunday at 1 p.m. against USF.
