DALLAS (SMU) – The Mustangs capped off a Saturday doubleheader split with a 5-2 win over Nebraska. SMU lost their morning match against Northern Colorado, 4-3.

In the 9 a.m. match against the Bears of Northern Colorado, the Mustangs got off to a hot start taking the doubles points. Jan-Simon Vrbsky and Tomas Vaise joined up for a 6-2 win on line one while Carles Sarrio and Andrew Buhelos won 6-2 on line two.

The Mustangs started three freshman in singles. Huntley Allen was a winner on Court four, 7-5, 6-3 for his second singles win this season. Eddie Ross fell to Smalley on court six, 6-3, 6-3 and Avery Pennywell took the first set 6-4 before dropping the last two 6-2, 6-3.

Roberto Rosales and Michael Smith lost their first sets on lines one and two but each responded with a second-set win. Rosales cruised in the third, 6-1 to take the top line and Smith couldn't get past UNC Arroyo in the 6-3 final frame.

Gardiner Perotti overcame an early hole to pull a first set tiebreaker win, before dropping his second set. With the match all square at three, Perotti battled to the end until finally losing the third set 6-3, giving Arroyo a run though after trailing 5-1. The Bears cliched the 4-3 win and improved to 2-2 on the season.

In the afternoon matchup with Nebraska, the Mustangs again took the doubles point, Vaise/Vrbsky won for the second time on the day, this time 7-5, and Sarrio and Allen cruised to a 6-2 win.

In singles, Vaise rolled Moreno in a speedy 6-2, 6-1 victory on line three, followed by Vrbsky, 6-3, 6-2 on court four, putting the Mustangs up 3-0. Huntley Allen won his first set on line five, 6-3 and hung around in set two forcing a tiebreaker. The freshman captured the point and clinched the Mustang win with a 7-1 tiebreaker edge. SMU improved to 3-2 on the season and the Huskers fell to 1-3.

After clinching, two matches came down to third set 10-point tiebreakers. Sarrio stayed perfect (3-0) on the season with a victory on line one, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0. Smith came out on the wrong end of his tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0. Rosales won the middle set of his 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Michah Klousia.

The Mustangs return to their home court next Sunday for a doubleheader with Texas-Permian Basin and Midwestern State.
