Forward Tara Comfort scored a pair of goals to lead the SMU women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over San Jose State Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field.

Comfort opened the scoring in the game's 20th minute. Midfielder Jill Heinemann sent a centering pass to senior forward Sarah Harvey, who flicked the ball on to to freshman midfielder Erin MacCullum, who was streaking down the right sideline. MacCullum drove all the way to the goalline before turning and sending a pass back toward the center of the penalty box, where Comfort buried the shot to give SMU what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The 1-0 lead held up until halftime. After the intermission, the offense broke out with three more goals. In the 63rd minute, Sarah Harvey centered the ball from the right sideline to her sister, Kim. Kim Harvey collected the ball and spun toward the net, sending a 15-yard shot into the twine to give SMU a 2-0 lead.

Sarah Harvey extended the Ponies lead in the 82nd minute with an unassisted goal, and Harvey capped off the scoring in the 89th minute when she stole a throw-in and slipped past SJSU goalkeeper Eryn Meyer.

"This is exactly what we needed," SMU head coach George Van Linder said after watching his team post its second consecutive shutout. "We'd lost three straight games, all to top 10 teams, but we needed a weekend like this."

Van Linder also admitted that his team focused in part on the fact that its 2000 season ended last November with a 4-2 loss to the Spartans in the Western Athletic Conference tournament.

"That's the last thing we talked about before going out on the field, that we needed to get a measure of vengeance for that game," he said. "We didn't play well in that game, and we wanted to make up for that a little today. They lost some starters from last year, but we're starting five freshmen, too. This was a great win for us."

With the win, the Ponies improve to 9-3 on the season. They play next at Hawaii Oct. 21; their next home game is Oct. 26 against Tulsa.
