Men's soccer still perfect!

Postby PonyPride » Sun Nov 18, 2001 8:35 pm

SMU's top-ranked men's soccer team won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon in St. Louis with a 2-1 victory over long-time rival Creighton in four overtimes.

The Ponies (19-0-0) scored first, in the 69th minute, when senior forward Luchi Gonzalez bounced a direct kick off the goalpost and into the Blue Jays' net. But Creighton got the equalizer just 27 seconds later when David Wagenfuhr pounced on a rebound and slipped it past SMU netminder Byron Foss.

The Ponies got the game winner in the 140th minute -- just 38 seconds before the conclusion of the period, which would have mean the game would have officially been recorded as a tie and the conference champion would have been determined by a penalty-kick shootout -- when senior forward Mohamed Fahim scored on assists from Gonzalez and freshman midfielder Jake Jackson.

The pairings for the NCAA Tournament, a.k.a. the College Cup, will be announced Monday. Log on to www.PonyFans.com to see who the Mustangs will play in the first round, and make plans to be at Westcott Field next weekend to see the game.

I'm holding on to my belief that the Ponies will bring us a National title....they have been awesome!!!
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

They sure have. I'll be there this weekend, whenever they play. Are you going to the game PK?

We need all the PonyFans out there. This team is awesome. Come watch them on the way to the national championship!

I would love to see the game, but depends on when it is. Lots of family in town for the holiday and lots of premade plans.

Thanks, there is a good chance I will be able to make that game with it being played on Sunday.
