Nicole Iloanya Qualifies For NCAA Championships In Triple Jump

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (SMU) – Nicole Iloanya qualified for the NCAA Championships in the triple jump on Saturday at the NCAA Preliminaries.

Coming into the triple jump prelims, Iloanya had the 22nd best seed mark in the NCAA West region. The senior needed to finish in the top 12 to earn her a spot at the NCAA Championships in Austin. Iloanya tied her career long with a jump 12.96 in her first attempt which was good for third after the first round of jumps of the top two flights.

After a foul in jump two, Iloanya added some insurance distance in her third attempt. The Arlington, Texas native recorded a her new personal best distance of 12.99, adding to her best mark which is fourth best in SMU history. After the competition ended, Iloanya sat in seventh earning one of the 12 coveted spots at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Iloanya is the fifth different Mustang to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the triple jump and the first since Isabella Marten in 2015.

Saturday was Iloanya's third career trip to the NCAA Prelims and her first time advancing. Iloanya finished 21st at the NCAA Prelims in 2018 while completing her junior season at San Jose State. In her freshman season, she finished in 43rd.

For the second year in a row, SMU Track and Field will send two athletes to the Championships. Ilonaya will join her teammate Chelsea Francis as qualifiers for the NCAA Championship. Francis was able to punch her ticket in the 100 meters on Friday.

The NCAA Championships is set for June 5-8 from Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas. The semifinal of the 100m start on June 6 with the finals set for June 8. The triple jump final is slated for June 8.
