Mustangs Make Match Play Beating Clemson In Playoff

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) – The SMU men's golf team advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for match play after defeating Clemson in a playoff for the final slot on Monday night.

The Mustangs teed off the fourth round paired with Clemson and Texas A&M. Throughout the course of the round, the Ponies found themselves going back and forth with Clemson for that eighth place slot. After 72 holes, the Mustangs found themselves tied at 44-over par with the Tigers.

The Mustangs went to a playoff with Clemson on holes No. 1 and No. 15-18. With all scores counting, the Mustangs claimed the win with all five players making par and Clemson bogeying No. 1 and No. 18.

Sophomore Mac Meissner (73-72-72-74–291) finished among the top 15 on the individual leaderboard and tied for 11th at 3-over par.

Sophomore Noah Goodwin (76-75-73-74–298) started the round strong with a birdie on his first hole of the day and adding two more in the front nine. Goodwin added another birdie in the back nine for a total of 17 birdies, the most carded by any of the Mustangs in the four rounds.

Freshman Ollie Osborne (82-72-73-76–302) helped put the team ahead Clemson during the round when he birdied No. 18 at the halfway mark. However, Osborne's big highlight of the day came during the playoff round when he found himself behind trees on the right side of the fairway and managed to get out and make par.
