SMU Varsity Eight Named The American Boat Of The Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) – SMU's Varsity Eight was named American Athletic Conference Boat of the Year, becoming the first crew in program history to earn the league's top honor. The Mustangs were a unanimous selection for the award by the league's head coaches.

The crew consisting of coxswain Emily Fogg, Brittany Rigg, Trevor Rose, Erin Pierce, Juliet Traylor, Madison van Meel, Megan Scott, Melissa Bradford and Peyton Mathews won the conference championship, defeating five-time conference champion UCF by open water.

SMU also won races against then-receiving votes and previously-ranked Alabama and Creighton. The crew posted the fastest time at the Sunshine State Invite in its heat race before suffering a breakage in the final.

The 1V8 boasted multiple all-conference award winners for the first time in program history, as Fogg earned a second-straight selection and Rigg was named to the team for the first time.

In addition to the all-conference selections and the Boat of the Year award, second-year head coach Kim Cupini and her staff were recognized as the league's Staff of the Year.
