Youssapha Sarr, who ran track at SMU and was an Olympian for his native Senegal, died Monday at his home near the SMU campus. He was 23.

SMU Police Capt. Rick Shafer said Sarr committed suicide in his apartment and was discovered Monday evening.

Track and field coach Dave Wollman said he talked to Sarr last week and there was no indication anything was wrong.

'He was upbeat; he smiled all the time,' Wollman said. 'He was dedicated to the sport, and he was disciplined in his studies as well as his athletic endeavors. The biggest thing was everybody loved him because he had an infectious way about him. He was a kind and loving person, which leaves us not understanding this at all.'

Wollman said Sarr's family all resides in Senegal.

Sarr was a junior who helped break a 17-year-old SMU indoor distance-medley record this season. Last year, he was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles at the Western Athletic Conference outdoor championships.

Before coming to SMU, he was a member of Senegal's 4x400 relay team that competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

A private memorial service will be held Saturday.

Sarr's death is the second SMU-related suicide, following the April 18 death of former swimming star Jerry Heidenreich.
