Iloanya Finishes 17th In Triple Jump At NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) – Nicole Iloanya finished 17th at the NCAA Championships in the triple jump on Saturday, finishing her career with an Honorable Mention All-America performance.

Iloanya's first jump from Mike A. Myers Stadium was her best of the day, with a distance of 12.97. Among the 24 competitors, the field would be narrowed down to nine athletes after the first three jumps. After falling short in her second jump, Iloanya recorded a 12.53 in her final jump. Iloanya narrowly missed second-team status as she moved from 16th to 17th after the final few competitors finished up. Her 17th place was the best triple jump finish for a Mustang since 2015.

Competing in her first season at SMU, Nicole Iloanya made the NCAA Championships for the first time in her career. She had reached the prelims twice before in her career at San Jose State. Coming back to to her home state of Texas for her senior season, Iloanya improved on her career long jump recording a 12.99 in the final jump of the NCAA Prelims. The mark is fifth best in SMU History to go along with her indoor mark which is second best ever by a Mustang.

Iloanya won a bronze at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in the triple jump while also competing in the long jump and the 4x100 relay. She was the only AAC competitor to advance to the NCAA Championships in the triple jump.

Along with Iloanya, Chelsea Francis competed in the 100 meter on Thursday. The junior earned honorable mention All-American status after her performance. Francis qualified for the NCAA Championshps in the Indoor (60m) and Outdoor (100m). During her third season, Francis won three AAC golds and was named Most Outstanding Performer at the American Athletic Conference Championships.
