DALLAS (SMU) – Seven different Mustangs tallied nine total goals in No. 25 SMU's 9-0 win over Texas Southern in the home opener on Thursday. The nine goals scored tied for the fifth-most in team history with juniors Jewel Boland and Katia Novi leading the way with two each.

The Mustangs (3-0) took an early lead with three goals in the first 20 minutes of the match. The first came in the 11th minute when senior Mary Meehan launched a pass across midfield to junior Hannah Allred, who was able to find the back of the net. Less than two minutes later, Boland scored in the 13th minute and Novi followed with a goal of her own in the 20th to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead before halftime.

SMU came out hot in the second half, scoring six more goals on the Tigers. Sophomore Celiana Torres was the first Mustang to add to the lead, netting a pass from redshirt-junior Jessica Cooley in the 49th minute and putting SMU up, 4-0.

Three goals came for SMU in 10 minutes when second goals for both Boland and Novi were scored in the 62ndand 70th minutes, respectively, and senior Allie Thornton wiggled her way between to net one in the 66th.

Allred tallied her second assist of the match on a pass to senior Robyn Maurer, who scored to increase the Mustang lead to 8-0. Senior Sophie Adler added the ninth and final goal for SMU in the 78th minute to give the team a 9-0 win and increase their record to 3-0 on the season.

SMU outshot Texas Southern (0-3) 31 to two, with 14 Mustang shots and both Tiger shots being on goal. The assist column was also heavy for SMU, with 10 assists split between nine athletes. Freshman Tatum Sutherland and redshirt-freshman Kierstin Flint split the duties in goal, each tallying one save to earn the combined shutout.

Tonight's match was the Mustangs' first game with nine goals since their 9-0 win over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Aug. 28, 2016.

SMU's next contest comes on Sunday when the Mustangs face TCU at 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.
