Heckmann Scores 18 Kills As SMU Sweeps Incarnate Word

ARLINGTON, Texas (SMU) – Freshman Mekenzi Heckmann scored 18 kills to lead SMU to a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-23, 25-19) against Incarnate Word Saturday in Arlington, Texas. She hit .432 with just two errors in 37 attempts as the Mustangs improved to 4-1 on the season.

Hannah Jacobs scored 13 kills to reach double figures for the fifth straight match. Lily Heim posted 40 of SMU's 45 assists, and Montana Watts finished with 16 digs after tallying just four in the first set. Freshman Kaylyn Winkler also shined defensively, recording five of SMU's seven blocks.

The Mustangs scored six straight points to take an 18-15 lead in the third set, and maintained the lead to complete the sweep with a 25-19 victory. Four different players scored kills during the rally. Heckmann scored kills on three of the last four points to give SMU the win, finishing the set with seven kills.

The first set was tied, 11-11, before SMU began to pull away. The Mustangs outscored UIW 14-8 for a 25-19 win to start the match. SMU spotted the Cardinals four points to start the second set, and trailed 8-4 before a 5-1 run tied the score. With the score still tied, 14-14, Heckman scored a kill to give SMU a 15-14 lead. It was the final lead change of the set. Despite trailing by only one point six more times down the stretch, UIW was unable to even the score. Meryn Kennedy scored the final kill to give SMU a 25-23 win in the second set.

SMU competes in the Missouri State Invitational Friday and Saturday. Dayton is slated as the Mustangs' first opponent Friday at 10 a.m.
