Mustangs Defeat Oklahoma 3-2 In Overtime

NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) – SMU defeated Oklahoma 3-2 in an overtime contest on Thursday night to extend their winning streak to four.

The first 45 minutes saw back-and-forth between the Mustangs (7-1-0) and the Sooners (4-3-2). Throughout the first 25 minutes of play, SMU dominated possession keeping the ball in Oklahoma territory for about 80 percent of play, despite losing junior Hannah Allred to an injury in the 15th minute of the match.

"Hannah has been playing really well for us, so that's not ideal," head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "It happens, though, and when people go down, you have to be ready to step up, and Jewel did that. They made it hard to play and pressured us…played a lot of balls in our box. When we were able to settle the ball, we played it very well."

After a scoreless first half, four goals were scored within 12 minutes during the second 45 minutes of play. Sophomore Celiana Torres was the first to find the back of the net and scored in the 60th minute off a set piece placed outside the top of the box.

Oklahoma got on the board in the 64th minute when redshirt senior Kaylee Dao converted a penalty kick for the equalizer.

Senior Allie Thornton put the Mustangs back out in front in the 68th minute when she scored on a right-footed shot across the front of the goal off of an assist from redshirt freshman Brigitta Pulins. Oklahoma would tie it back up four minutes later when Maya McCutcheon scored in the 72nd minute.

The rest of regulation went by without a goal, sending SMU into its first overtime of the season. Oklahoma had the first chance of the overtime period with a penalty kick, but the Sooners shot high and weren't able to convert the attempt.

Thornton scored the golden goal in the 101st minute with an assist from fellow senior Hailey Bishop. The goal was Thornton's fourth game-winner of the season and 11th of her career.

"We got a second life after they missed the penalty," Petrucelli said. "Hailey played a really nice ball and Allie did what she does and she got us the win."

SMU continues its road trip when the Mustangs take on Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

Any update on Hannah's injury?

Criminal that she was injured on a play and no foul called. SMU committed same foul twice and twice OU was awarded a PK. Nasty Dirt-Burglars. It was good to get out of there with the win.
