Question For Pony Pride

Postby PX » Mon Dec 02, 2002 1:10 pm

When was the last time one of our soccer teams, men or women, WON a game on penalty kicks? I was just thinking a little while ago that I cant remember seeing a win on PK's, ever, by either team. There must be one somewhere, but I cant for the life of me remember it. I do know that we have lost at least the last 5 combined (women twice at A&M, Men to BC, Bradley, and St. Louis in that nightmare playoff game a few years ago.)
So, break out the media guides and tell us, when was our last (first?) PK victory, and whats the record overall?

I'll look it up. But before I do, you can add penalty kick losses to Indiana and Duke in the playoffs in the early 1990s for the men's team. I'll see what I can find.

I remember the loss to Duke. Or more precisely, I remember talking to a highly agitated and somewhat inebriated John Howard a few hours afterward. If I recall, we had beaten that same Duke team 3-1 earlier, so in the playoff game they spent 2 and 1/2 hours kicking the ball out of bounds or letting their goalie stand around with the ball, to kill the clock and keep the 0-0 tie. Penalty kicks were the only way they had a chance, so they did everything they could to kill the game.

OK, so thats going back about 10 years. And I still cant recall a shootout that we won. I'm starting to think that we havent ever won one.

SMU is 0-4 on shootout games in the NCAA Tournament.

Losses have come against:
Indiana (1991)
Duke (1992)
Saint Louis (1997)
Boston College (2002)

And I was at three of them (all but this year's loss to BC). No wonder I'm aging so fast.

In addition, SMU also lost this year's Misourri Valley Conference semifinal to Bradley on PKs.
