Mustangs Defeat Baylor For Season-Opening Win

DALLAS (SMU) – No. 5 SMU opened the season with a 14-5 win over No. 6 Baylor and earned three of the four Most Outstanding Player awards on Friday.

The Mustangs (1-0) started strong, sweeping the Bears (0-1) in flat competition. SMU points came from Kirsten Ostling scoring an 87 on Punch, Mary Elizabeth Cordia scoring an 86 on Converse, Vivian Yowan scoring a 90 on Rosie, Miranda Seade scoring an 85 on Zulu and Haley Zimmerman scoring an 80 on Hamilton. Yowan earned the highest score of the event and her first MOP of the season.

SMU also outscored Baylor in Horsemanship, 3-2, to take an 8-2 lead at the halfway mark of the meet. Payton Neiberger scored 73 on Shirley, Megan Waldron scored 72.5 on Ray and Aubrey Alderman scored 75 on Tex in the first Western event of the day.

The Bears won the fences event, edging out SMU 3-2. Devin Seek and Tali DeJong won the Mustang points with an 87 on Dillon and a 77 on Santos, respectively. Seek's score was the highest of the event, earning her an MOP. SMU held on to the lead, heading into the final event up 10-5.

SMU finished just as strong as they started, earning four points and a tie in reining to end the day. Jill Pfisthner tied her opponent at 72 on Tinsel. The Mustangs earned the rest of the four points, starting with Dani Latimer, who earned a 72 on Moe in her first career meet. Aubrey Alderman scored a 69.5 on Carlee, Savannah Ostner scored a 69.5 on Mercedes and Holly Lansidel earned a 71.5 on Stewie to secure the win for SMU. Alderman won SMU's third MOP for her performance during the event.

"It was great to start the season with a strong home win," head coach Carol Gwin said. "Our team really came together as a family, We are four weeks into the season and this is the closest team that I have worked with. Congratulations to Coach Lantz and Coach Henter for having our girls well prepared."

Up next, the Mustangs travel to cross-town rival TCU for a meet on Thursday, Oct. 10 at Diamond Creek Ranch in Burleson, Texas.
